About Bego Sánchez

Artist Biography

Bego Sánchez was born in Bata, Equatorial Guinea and, at the age of four, she moved back with her family to Bilbao, Northern Spain. Since her childhood she feels attracted by nature and wild life documentals. During her musical education in piano she delved into studying Art history, which will mark her later photographic career. After obtaining  her Bachelor Degree in Biology she moved abroad for seven years and she gets her Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English. Her experiences in the English countryside, United States, London and New Delhi provided her with new visual and cultural sensations imbueding her with images for which she felt the emerging need to photograph. With her compact camera she captured everyday and landscape scenes keeping them as memories of her trips. As she returned to Bilbao she worked at a pharmaceutical company as Secretary to the R&D Director for twelve years taking up painting watercolour during her free time. A change of direction in her life drives her to move to Seville, Southern Spain, in the summer of 2013. The light and colour of Andalusia, its landscapes, nature and popular festivals arouse in her the true passion for photography.

She is a self-taught photographer who learns the principles of light by studying the classic painters and the masters of photography. Her microscopy research experience at the Cytolgy and Histology Lab of the Basque Country University has a strong influence on her way of seeing nature elements and structures. Thus, her collection of artistic photography of the Tinto River and Riotinto Mining Area constitutes a significant body of her work.

Influenced by Vivian Maier's photographic work she also develops an interest for street photography. Her first project "In transit" shows images of people using public transport. Living in Andalusia she strongly feels the atmosphere of popular and religious festivals. These events also constitute part of her body of work showing, in certain cases, her taste for classic painting.

Bego Sánchez holds three itinerant collections: "Visions of the Tinto river" , "In transit"S, and "TABLAS, rice harvest at the low Guadalquivir river" . Since June 2017 see holds solo exhibitions at Natural Science Museums and Cultural Centers in Spain.
